Accesible Learning Content

About

Accessibility standards improve overall user experience and social inclusion for people with disabilities and other groups, such as those using mobile devices, the aging population, and residents of areas with limited access to the internet.

This initiative improved online course content offered through the Inter-American Institute for Economic and Social Development (INDES) by the integration of accessibility standards in its design and production.

The main goal was that INDES courses complied with the Web 2.0 Content Accessibility Guidelines established by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium).

My Role

Research

I conducted literature research and worked alongside Ilunion, an accessibility firm, to conduct an accessibility assessment for INDES online courses. The goal of this assessment was to test one course to identify accessibility barriers and develop best practices to address them.

The course was tested and reviewed by consultants with different disabilities: hearing, sight, and motor. This helped us understand what changes needed to be implemented to achieve different levels of accessibility in our content.

Develop a Practical Guide

Based on the results of the research and the consultancy, I developed a practical guide for teams involved in the design and production of online courses. This guide focused on best practices for course content development.

Deliver Training

I delivered workshops for the teams involved in the design and production of online courses, so teams could implement these guides in their daily work.  The workshops focused on an overall understanding of accessibility in learning content, its importance, and how to successfully implement it.
